6 Tips for Family Health & Fitness

  Exercise is one of the best things for making your mind and body live longer and feel better. You can create lasting family memories by involving your children in this important part of life and by making family workouts a priority.

Here are some ideas for family health and fitness projects:
  1. Hop on your bikes and ride through your neighborhood, or head to a nearby park for a family picnic. Take a mini “staycation” to a local museum, movie or shopping mall. Don’t forget to wear your helmets, bright clothing and headlight reflectors to increase your safety on the road.
  2. Just turn up the music and boogie. Check out this family singing and dancing in their jammies. Dancing is a fun form of exercise that can improve flexibility, reduce stress, help your heart and increase energy.
  3. Sing at the top of your lungs. Singing helps strengthen lungs and improve mood. According to a joint study by Harvard and Yale universities, singing also can help you live longer because it promotes a healthy heart and enhanced mental state. Watch this family singing along to “Love is an Open Door” from the Disney movie, Frozen.
  4. Work out for a cause. Enter the whole family in a local charity walk or run or bike race. In addition to making lasting memories and helping others, your family also might win an award and maybe take home a great prize.
  5. Walk your dog. This not only helps your furry family member to stay healthy but also helps you to live a happier and healthier life. Research shows that walking for at least 30 minutes a day can help reduce the risk of heart disease, breast and colon cancer, diabetes and osteoporosis, and it can help with weight control, and blood pressure, as well as improve your mental well-being.
  6. Play outdoor games to pack a big punch – they’re a lot fun and cost little to nothing! Try a few activities like playing hide-and-seek, tag, or chase. You could take a scavenger hunt hike and see which family member finds the most acorns, bird’s nests, or colorful leaves. You could also grab your nearby friends and challenge them to a game of neighborhood kickball.
